Charity walk for raising breast cancer awareness in funky bras!

CYPRUS STARLIGHT CHALLENGE Press Release (received from the organizers)

Do you want a challenge, some fun, to get fit and help others? Then join the Cyprus Starlight Challenge on Saturday 31st March 2007 – a sponsored walk in aid of cancer charities.
A challenge? – It’s a 42km sponsored walk although there is an optional 21km half marathon.
Fun? – It takes place at night under the stars with the option of wearing a specially decorated bra as a dress code.
Get fit? – It requires training to walk that distance and that can only be healthy for you.
Help Others? – It’s a sponsored walk and all monies raised will be shared between the Marguerite Cancer Patient Support Team and Breakthrough – a charity committed to raising money and awareness for breast cancer care.

On the evening of Saturday 31st March all keen men and women will be gathering at Chesters Bar and Restaurant in Limassol to warm up before setting out on their marathon walk at midnight. The half marathon - 21 km starts at Chesters Bar and proceeds along the beach road to the zoo returning via the same route. The full marathon, 42 km follows the same route but is repeated a second time. The route will be fully marshalled and policed. Toilet facilities will be available.

The walk takes place at night and is inspired by the ‘London Moonlight’ Walk. One of the objectives of this walk is to raise awareness for breast cancer and traditionally walkers wear decorated bras – a normal bra trimmed with ribbons, bows, glitter, stickers, fur – anything to adorn it and make it fun looking. (This is optional and walkers will be provided with T-shirts with the Starlight Logo which they may prefer to wear)

Walking such a long distance requires prior training. And for those who aren’t fit at present – it’s a good way to give the heart and the rest of the body a good workout. Training needs to start gradually and work up to the full marathon. Unless you are extremely fit already – walking 42km at night without any prior training is inadvisable. The Cyprus Starlight Challenge group have teams of people training at different times of the day – all with different walking capabilities – so it’s easy to join a group and start training.

Cancer is a disease which can afflict anyone at any time. Both the Charities supported by the Cyprus Starlight Challenge provide support in different ways. The Marguerite Cancer Patient Support team provides immediate temporary care and support to cancer suffers here in Cyprus. Breakthrough is instrumental in research into the disease and the development of new treatments. All monies raised will be shared equally between the two charities.

This is the first such walk here in Cyprus and it is hoped it will become an annual event thus providing participants a regular challenge, fun, fitness and sense of well being. So come and join us on Saturday 31st March 2007 at Chesters bar and register now to ensure your place as only a limited number are available!
